Students at universities in the University of Maine system (UMS) can choose from 239 bachelor`s majors, 399 minors, 361 concentrations, and 25 associate degree programs. All UMS majors introduce students to topics that are broad and substantial in terms of theory, content, and methods of investigation and analysis. Students who progress to the major develop in-depth knowledge and mastery of at least one disciplinary or interdisciplinary field. Some programs of study require a minor subject, while others require concentration. University catalogues define the hour of academic credit and distinguish courses at the < 100, 100, 200, 300 and 400 levels for bachelor`s theses. Academic credits for the degree are not awarded for courses completed at the <100 level, although some universities offer refresher or remedial courses at this level as a prerequisite for other courses or in transfer. UMS universities traditionally organize programs of study to emphasize 100 and 200 level courses in the first two years of post-secondary studies. UMS does not promise that enrollment and payment up to the PhD will guarantee that a student will be able to complete each level of study. In order to obtain a degree, all requirements of this level must be met.
All undergraduate programs include general, major, minor, and concentration requirements that are clearly articulated in catalogues and websites. Advanced courses identify prerequisites for enrollment, which may include introductory courses, GPA threshold, required benchmarks, and/or instructor authorization. The general educational requirements in each UMS bachelor`s degree program ensure a reasonable breadth for all students pursuing a degree. General academic outcomes are defined for each high school diploma and associate diploma to include courses in arts and sciences, humanities, mathematics and social sciences. Individual graduate programs are offered by UM, USM, UMF, UMPI, UMA and the Faculty of Law. UMFK will offer a graduate nursing program starting in fall 2024. UMA will offer a Master`s program in Trauma-Informed Management starting in fall 2022, with lecturers from other UMS universities participating. A growing cohort of multi-university programs includes the MS in Cybersecurity offered by UMA and USM, and a system-wide partnership of the seven universities that program geographic information systems (GIS).
UMS universities offer a diverse complement to academic programs, including associates (minimum 60 credits), bachelor`s degree (minimum 120), master`s degree (minimum 30), and final degrees, such as a doctorate (typically 30 beyond master`s degree), as well as bachelor`s and master`s certificates. Most bachelor`s degree programs require 120 credits. Some programs closely linked to career paths exceed 120 credit hours (e.g., architecture, nursing, and engineering). UMS universities adhere to a credit hours standard that meets the federal definition. As UMS confirmed in previous correspondence with the Commission: « The institution`s graduate programs comply with the NECHE Credit and Diploma Policy. Transfer credits accepted for graduate programs are limited and generally do not exceed 25% of the total points required to obtain a master`s or doctoral degree. (The institution`s higher education degrees require a minimum of 30 credits, with at least 30 additional credits beyond the master`s degree required for a degree.) For example, UM allows no more than six external post-bachelor credits for master`s programs and no more than 30 credits for doctoral programs. (These are usually master`s credits earned at university prior to a student`s admission to a UM PhD program) (UMS request for substantial amendment of June 2020, p. 29). Maine Graduate and Professional Center`s graduate programs emphasize integrated, experiential, and interdisciplinary programs that are truly relevant to graduate students and professionals in their core disciplines. No student is allowed to graduate without meeting all the requirements, whether doctrinal, practical or experiential. Each program is responsible for defining competency criteria.
This is achieved in several ways. Some require a minimum GPA and class grade to complete the course, while others include an oral defense or passing a national certification exam. These funds are intended to support mature students who return to college after an absence of at least three (3) years or more and complete their first bachelor`s degree. Applicants may be eligible for a maximum of $4,000 per academic year for up to eight (8) consecutive semesters. Each of these tools uses a student information system called MaineStreet. With this system, UMS manages all student records, from admission and financial support to class registration and bill payment. These tools provide access to elements related to credit transfer and audits. University degree requirements are designed to prepare students for competence and independent growth. Post-baccalaureate certificates range from nine to 18 credits, and graduate program structures vary by degree. For example, if they complete 12 credit hours or enroll in their third semester, UM graduate students submit a program of study that includes a plan to meet their needs. Students in professional programs participate in internships or field experience courses, and some must pass national accreditation exams. Students in the M.S., M.F.A., Ed.D.
and Ph.D. programs write a thesis or dissertation. Students must meet the established requirements of the program of study or college to which they are transferred. Transfer credits are not always taken into account in these requirements. At the program level, each university may determine that transfer credits cannot be used to meet important requirements. A student from another UMS campus who has completed the UMS General Education Transfer Block as certified by their home campus may be required to take the following additional general education courses at the University of Maine to ensure that the educational requirements imposed by the University of Maine have been met. (a) Human Values and Social Context – At least three additional course items in one of the areas of the Human Values and Social Context sub-category of UMaine. (b) An intensive writing course in the major (c) A Capstone Experience course – Usually an explicit course defined by the major with at least three credits. Back to top of page II. Requirements for the major university degree General education has proven effective in teaching skills and is an integral part of undergraduate education.
The general educational requirements of the seven universities are easily accessible and accessible to students in the universities` bachelor`s catalogues, which also include the reasons for each general education requirement. Admission requirements for Malaysia Sabah University are subject to UMS undergraduate study regulations. The selection of students from this university is done through the following: – Program overviews and degree requirements for individual majors are available in the bachelor`s catalogs. In many cases, this information is available to students on college and/or department websites and from faculty advisors or professional advisory staff. Student learning objectives for programs of study are published on departmental and/or college websites. Each UMS university has set guidelines for continuation, termination, and readmission to its academic programs. Academic reputation is based on measurable academic outcomes, and the requirements for maintaining a good reputation are clearly defined and applied uniformly by each university by its faculty and administrators. The number of credits required, general academic achievement, list of courses that meet general educational requirements, and performance expectations are included in university catalogues and on university websites.
Student academic plans define courses that meet overall academic achievement and overall credit requirements for bachelor`s and associate degree programs. Students complete the equivalent of 40 credits in general education courses for bachelor`s degrees and 20 credits for associate degrees. In the spring of 2022, YourPace faculty and administrators used admission and registration data to report changes to the program`s admission requirements. These requirements now include additional documentation (e.g. essay, letter of recommendation) where warranted. Transfer Guides – Use this guide to review program requirements at one of the EMS institutions and explore courses currently available. If you`re currently enrolled at a Maine institution and plan to transfer to a UMS campus in the future, this is a great tool to help you with your current course selection process. Students who are moving from the University of Maine to another campus in the University of Maine system and who have met the general educational requirements listed below may apply to have this degree certified for a general education block transfer to the other institution. Applicants can search www.moe.gov.my for comprehensive information about the program`s terms and conditions and special requirements, and then submit their application online after the ad is published in major local newspapers.
